GREENLAND, Ark. -- The state department of education has recommended that Greenland schools be annexed by a neighboring district because of debt, and that could spell the end of athletics as well.

Football should be fun this time of year, and the Greenland Pirates are taking part in 7-on-7 passing leagues, but they have other concerns.

"It's extremely tough because if they were to get rid of Greenland, then somebody is going to have an open date on their schedule. I know in the grand scheme of things -- in the educational process -- that doesn't mean a lot to people, but it means a lot to our kids and the kids we're going to play. So, middle of the summer it's tough, tough to go on vacation, tough to find time to go on vacation. The thought that you might not have a job or a school to attend makes it tough," said Greenland Athletic Director Lee Larkan.

The final word comes down next Monday, but until then Greenland players, coaches, administrators and parents are waiting to see what happens.
