Ted Zarras, Meteorologist

Ted Zarras has been a part of the KHBS 40/29 storm team since February of 2006. Just a few weeks after his arrival, on the night of March 12th, Ted storm tracked a severe thunderstorm that produced several violent tornadoes. Passing through Delaware, Benton and Carol counties, the storm ultimately produced F-3 damage and forever changed the lives of many. Of the experience he says; “It was sort of surreal, tracking what I had only previously studied and seen in the books… though, with people’s lives at stake, you just do your job and keep everyone safe!”

Ted is a Certified Broadcast Meteorologist (CBM) by the American Meteorological Society (AMS), earning the seal of approval that requires a Bachelor of Science in Meteorology, rigorous testing in atmospheric and other sciences, along with intense scrutiny of on-air work by an AMS review board comprised of some of the top broadcast meteorologists in the country. At present count, there are less than 250 meteorologists that hold this most prestigious distinction.

Ted earned his degree in Meteorology along with a minor in Technical Mathematics from Plymouth State University, in New Hampshire. Before joining the 40/29 storm team, he served as the Weekend Meteorologist for the NBC affiliate in Bend, Oregon. Ted greatly enjoys sharing his education, giving many talks throughout the year to all school grades, various adult groups as well as community based organizations. He would love to speak to your group!

Ted grew up on Long Island, NY and in southern Connecticut. Hurricanes Agnes and Belle, as well as the 27” of snow that fell from the great Blizzard of 1978 all made him very interested in the weather. Ted has also lived in North Carolina where he played jazz drums professionally and ultimately met his wife Stephanie. They have been married for over six years and have a baby girl.
