Woman, Two Kids Survive Train Crash In Van Buren

Five-Car Train Strikes Car Driven By Unlicensed Woman

POSTED: 4:23 pm CDT October 4, 2008

A woman and two young children in a car survived a train crash Saturday morning.

Anne Gallardo was driving southbound along North 20th Street in Van Buren at about 11 a.m. when she failed to stop for an oncoming Arkansas-Missouri Excursion Train, police said.

There is a crossing sign but no warning signals at that crossing. Police said the train horn was sounding to alert the driver.

The front of the eastbound five-car train struck the car's right side, spinning the car around one and a half times.

Gallardo, who was not injured, was cited for having no driver's license and failure to yield. A 4-year-old boy was injured in the crash; and a 10-year-old boy was also a passenger in the car.

Police said the train had just loaded at a downtown depot and was not traveling very fast.
