A man charged with attempted murder has been sentenced to 30 years in prison.

Police said Miguel Martinez, 24, went to the home of his former girlfriend last February and tried to smother her with a pillow as she slept.

When she woke up, prosecutors said Martinez stabbed her repeatedly.

Martinez entered the United State illegally, officers said.

He pleaded guilty to the charges and is being held at the Washington County Jail.

Prosecutors said he will be deported after serving his sentence.
