Former Bentonville Teacher To Challenge Student Sex Law

UPDATED: 5:08 pm CDT May 16, 2008

Attorneys for a former Bentonville teacher plan to challenge the constitutionality of the state law that prohibits school teachers from engaging in sexual contact with students.

Melissa Monroe, 32, was charged with sexual assault and furnishing alcohol to a minor, officials said.

Monroe had sex with an 18-year-old student and provided him alcohol on several occasions, police said.

Even though the student was 18 when the alleged encounter took place, Arkansas law states it is a crime for a public school teacher to engage in sexual contact with a student younger than 21, officials said.
