UA Fort Smith To Offer 25 Summer Camps

More than 25 different camps are available for preschoolers through college-age students this summer at the University of Arkansas - Fort Smith, and there are even some opportunities for parents and grandparents to go to camp with their children.

Several of the camps provide just-for-fun activities. Others give students a way to "preview" a career possibility. Still others enhance creative talents in an imaginative and fun environment. Camp topics include sports, music, computers, robotics, theatre, health careers, and crime scene investigation.

Some camps have registration deadlines as early as mid May, and others allow at-the-door registrations. Several camps require specific skill levels prior to registering. Some have limited enrollment. All camps have age or grade levels specified.

The schedule includes:

June 2-4: Volleyball Camps The first individual volleyball camp at UA Fort Smith has two separate sessions for grades 3 through 8, one from 9 a.m. until noon and one from 1 to 4 p.m. June 2-4. Students sign up for only one of the two sessions. A junior high team camp will meet from 4:30 until 9 p.m. A second camp will be held June 16-18. June 2-4: Baseball Camps for Boys

The first of three baseball skills camps for boys in grades K-6 will be held June 2-4 at Crowder Field at the University of Arkansas – Fort Smith. The camp runs from 9 a.m. until noon each day. Cost is $80 per camper. Other sessions run June 9-11 and June 16-18. For more information, contact Coach Dale Harpenau at 788-7597 or the Athletics Office at 788-7590.

June 2-5: Bridging Generations Summer Camp for Grandparents and Parents

Parents and grandparents of children and youth ages 3-15 can go to summer camp with their children or grandchildren at the University of Arkansas - Fort Smith. Two separate camps meet June 2-5, one from 9 to 11:30 a.m. and one from 1 to 3:30 p.m. Classes include Chinese, German, bridge, culinary arts, dance, sign language and digital scrapbooking. The $150 fee covers both the child and the adult. Two more camps are planned for July. For more information, contact the Center for Lifelong Learning at UA Fort Smith, 788-7212.

June 2-6: Summer Jazz Band Camp

May 16 is the deadline to sign up for Summer Jazz Band Camp, slated for June 2-6 at the University of Arkansas - Fort Smith. Any band student finishing the eighth grade (who has director's consent) through 12th grade is eligible to attend. Students must play a jazz band instrument. The camp will meet from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. daily and will include rehearsals, jazz improv sessions, listening and ear training, master classes and sectionals. A guest performance and clinic by the 106th Army Jazz-Funk Band will also be included, as will a Friday night performance and a student jam session at Sweet Bay Coffee following the performance. June 9-11: Girls Basketball Camp

University of Arkansas - Fort Smith women's basketball coach Louis Whorton will conduct three individual camps for girls in grades 3-9 during June and July at Stubblefield Center. The first session will be June 9-11 and will run from 9 a.m. until noon each day. Second and third sessions are June 23-25 and July 28-30. Fee per camp is $80 or $140 for two in a family and includes a T-shirt. For more information, call 788-7590 or 788-7595.

June 9-11: Baseball Camp for Boys

University of Arkansas - Fort Smith baseball coach Dale Harpenau will conduct the second of three baseball skills camps for boys in grades K-6 on June 9-11 at Crowder Field on the UA Fort Smith campus. The camp will meet from 9 a.m. until noon each day. Cost is $80 per camper. A third camp will be held June 16-18. June 9-13: Junior High and Middle School Band Camp

Junior High and Middle School Band Camp will meet at the University of Arkansas - Fort Smith from 9 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. June 9-13. Band students finishing grades 6, 7 or 8 this spring who have played an instrument for at least one school year are eligible. Group lesson topics include performance techniques, warm-up exercises, etudes, and related activities. Rehearsals are held each morning and afternoon with a 6:30 p.m. concert on June 13. Fee is $85 and is due by June 6. There is an additional $10 fee for late registration or registration at the door. June 16-18: Volleyball Camp

The University of Arkansas - Fort Smith has scheduled an individual volleyball camp for girls on June 16-18. The camp will meet from 9 a.m. until noon for all grades. Fee is $80. For more information, contact Coach Jane Sargent at 788-7603 or Julie Martin in the Athletics Office at 788-7590.

June 16-18: Baseball Camp for Boys

June 16-19: H.O.T.T. Skills Camp

"H.O.T.T. Skills Camp (Health Occupations for Today and Tomorrow)" is a camp for young men entering grades 9-12 and will meet from 9 a.m. until noon June 16-19 at the University of Arkansas - Fort Smith. Daily career features include entering a mock operating room to assist in an appendectomy procedure with surgical technology on June 16; learning to determine care and health issues using "Sim" man, one of the school's high fidelity simulators in nursing on June 17; generating X-rays on a typodont, producing impressions of teeth and pouring up models in dental hygiene on June 18; and performing various scientific experiments including magnetism, electricity, electrostatic and optics relating to the basics of the imaging sciences on June 19. Space is limited, and registrations will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. Fee is $15 per day or $50 for four days. June 16-20: "Whodunit?" Camp

"Whodunit?" is back. Through Camp E!magination, the University of Arkansas - Fort Smith is offering the weeklong criminal justice camp from 1 to 4:30 p.m. June 16-20. This is a non-traditional career exploration opportunity for teens entering grades 7-12. Space is limited, and registrations will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. Fee is $30. June 16-20: String Jazz Improv Camp

Deadline is May 26 for a String Jazz Improv Camp planned for June 16-20 at the University of Arkansas - Fort Smith. Any orchestra student finishing eighth grade (with director consent) through 12th grade is eligible to attend. The camp will meet from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. daily and includes rehearsals, jazz improv sessions, master classes and sections, combo rehearsals, a Friday night performance, and a student jam session at Sweet Bay Coffee following the Friday night concert. June 22-28: National Brass Academy

The June 22-28 National Brass Academy at the University of Arkansas – Fort Smith is for high school and college brass players. The camp will feature the Apex Brass Quintet and soloists Pat Sheridan and Sam Pilafian. Sheridan has appeared as a tuba soloist in venues ranging from the White House to an NBA half-time show at the Hollywood Bowl. Pilafian is best known as a founding member of the internally renowned Empire Brass Quintet. The National Brass Academy will include rehearsals, private lessons, master classes and concerts. Fee is $160 for a commuter student and $265 for a resident student, with housing in Sebastian Commons. July 7-11: Web Design Camp

A Web Design Camp is planned for July 7-11 through Camp E!magination at the University of Arkansas - Fort Smith. The camp can accommodate 15 aspiring Web designers entering grades 9-12. Participants will tackle Adobe Photoshop and HTML coding, using Notepad and other programs to create a Web site. The camp meets from 8:30 a.m. until noon. Fee is $30. July 22-23: Bare Bones Computer Surgery Camp

The University of Arkansas - Fort Smith is providing through Camp E!magination a Bare Bones Computer Surgery Camp on July 22-23. It will meet from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. Participants will receive an introduction to electronics in which students will learn computer hardware basics with hands-on activities, ending with a working personal computer. Fee for this camp is $25 and includes lunch. Space is limited to 24 participants entering grades 7-12. July 28-30: Girls Basketball Camp

July 28-Aug. 2: KinderKidz Camp

KinderKidz Camp is a new summer camp for preschool children being offered through the University of Arkansas - Fort Smith Academy of the Arts, which is a division of the Center for Lifelong Learning. The camp will explore the world of music, movement and theatre in a fun-filled environment. Age divisions include the Creepy Crawlerz, for those up to 24 months, meeting from 9 to 9:45 a.m. each day; the Kool Katz, for those two to five years old, meeting from 10 to 11 a.m.; and the Boogie Woogie Bearz, for those entering kindergarten up through 2nd grade, meeting from 11:15 to 12:45 each day. July 28-Aug. 2: Summer Camp Explosion

A brand new Summer Camp Explosion will be offered by the Academy of the Arts at the University of Arkansas - Fort Smith. It will meet July 28 - Aug. 2 and offers theatre, dance, show choir and art for students in grades 3 through 10. Participants, who may enroll in as many of the four activities as they wish, will exhibit their work and perform at Xtreme Arts KidFest, planned for 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. Aug. 2. Fee is $150 for one activity, $275 for two, $350 for three, or $400 for four. Enrollment is limited. Summer Camp Explosion is offered through the Academy of the Arts, a division of the Center for Lifelong Learning. July 29: Robotics Camp

Participants in a July 29 Robotics Camp provided through Camp E!magination at the University of Arkansas - Fort Smith will learn the basics of robotic sensing and locomotion by controlling a ROBOTIC ARM. Students will command this unit with its five-switch wired controller and will test motor skills with corresponding lights to grab, release, lift, lower, rotate write and pilot sideways 350 degrees -- all while having fun! The camp, which meets from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m., is limited to 12 teens entering grades 7-12. Fee is $15, which includes lunch.
