GREENLAND, Ark. -- The future of the Greenland School District is up in the air as it may be annexed into another district.

The state Board of Education said the district has some serious money issues.

The board is expected to make a decision on the future of the district July 14.

Before then, both parents and students in Greenland said that they are nervous about the possibility of starting the school year in a new school.

Farmington’s assistant superintendent said that uncertainty is driving some Greenland parents to take advantage of an Arkansas act called school choice.

“The idea is for parents and students to see how best they match with a district and how best that district matches with them," Bryan Law said.

If a district has room and the staff for more students, it can accept students from other districts.

This fall a new elementary will be open in Farmington, and the high school is not at capacity. So, out of 45 applicants from Greenland, the Farmington District has accepted 29.

Just because a student has been accepted into another district doesn't mean he or she has to attend there in the fall.

If Greenland stays open, many students may go there.

The state could force Greenland to annex with a neighboring district, but many school leaders in those districts are opposed to that idea because they don't want to assume Greenland's debt.
