NCAA Game Summary - New Mexico At Tulsa

(Sports Network) - David Johnson threw for 469 yards and six touchdowns to lead the Tulsa Golden Hurricane to a 56-14 victory over the New Mexico Lobos in non-conference play at Chapman Stadium.

Damaris Johnson finished with 109 receiving yards and three touchdowns for Tulsa (3-0), while Slick Shelley caught six passes for 129 yards and two scores.

Rodney Ferguson led the way for UNM (1-3), rushing for 122 yards and one touchdown in the setback.

The Golden Hurricane dominated the opening quarter of this matchup scoring three straight touchdowns, beginning with a 23-yard scoring strike from Johnson to Johnson.

Johnson tossed his second touchdown of the quarter when he hit Shelley with a 13-yard pass midway through the frame.

Tulsa pushed its lead to 21-0 with just seconds remaining in the first quarter, as Johnson found Johnson once again, this score coming on a 28-yard pass.

In the second quarter the Golden Hurricane used a seven-yard touchdown run by A. J. Whitmore and a 64-yard touchdown pass from Johnson to Shelley to go into the break with a 35-0 lead.

Tulsa continued its strong play in the second half, as Johnson connected with Charles Clay on a 20-yard touchdown pass midway through the third quarter.

New Mexico finally found the scoreboard with just over five minutes remaining in the third stanza, as Ferguson scored on a 37-yard touchdown run.

The fourth quarter was more of the same for Tulsa, as Johnson connected with Johnson again, this time for a nine-yard touchdown pass.

A little over a minute later Roy Roberts returned an interception 41 yards to push Tulsa's lead to 56-7.

Late in the final frame Brad Gruner hit Bryant Williams with a 21-yard touchdown pass, but it was far too late for New Mexico, as Tulsa went on to win by a 56-14 decision.
